A public consultation meeting which took place Thursday in relation to the proposed redevelopment of the former Howard Mallett Centre and land adjoining Sturton Street, Cambridge attracted more than 100 people.

The proposal encompasses refurbishment of the former Howard Mallett Centre into a modern new home for BodyWork Dance Studios, a new community coffee shop and landmark student accommodation building, as well as improvements to St Matthew's Piece.

The meeting, which took place at the Cherry Trees Day Centre in nearby St Matthew’s Street, was organised by developers Chard Robinson in order to provide local people with more information about the proposed project, and give them the opportunity to hear from architect Will Alsop and the entire planning and consultant team.

Detailed plans, visuals and a model for the site were unveiled, providing a first glimpse of the landmark and environmentally efficient student accommodation building designed by internationally acclaimed architect Alsop.

All attendees were invited to complete a detailed questionnaire in order to provide feedback and register for further information about the project. This will form part of further redesigns and evolution of the concept before any planning application is submitted.

Company directors Stephen Chard and Neil Robinson said: “We were delighted with the turnout, and with the feedback received from attendees. There were lots of passionate views about the signature building and the future of St Matthew’s Piece itself. Certainly plenty of feedback that we can work with.”
